4th November – Wensum 4 – 3 Avenue Junior

What a week. After trips to London, a visit from an inspector and so much fantastic scientific work the week ended with a Y6 football fixture versus Avenue Junior.

With the pitch in great condition and our players showing absolutely no signs of tiredness it promised to be an exciting fixture.

Wensum started well and passed hard in the first half. Our first corner gave us a chance to try out our set piece routines that we had been working on at lunchtimes. Munir delivered from the right. The ball found Oliver at the back post who got his shot on target and the ball found the back of the net!

Avenue Junior battled back into the game and found themselves level after a lapse in concentration at the back saw the opposition score to make it 1-1.

Just before half time Lennon pounced on a clearance and took a shot from outside the box – the ball flying through the bottom corner.

Half time. 2-1 Wensum Junior.

After a stirring team talk and a couple of changes Wensum continued to press hard. Lennon found himself free and got his shot away to make it 3-1.

Munir, Bobby and Arlo battled hard in midfield and continue to break down the Avenue advances. With 7 minutes left Lennon completed his hat-trick with a superb shot from outside the box beating the keeper. The celebrations showed the relief at taking the lead and having a bit of a gap.

Cue Wensum’s Norwich City style collapse. The midfield let the opposition run through and score. As quickly as we had kicked off again the ball was back with the opposition who ran through and found the back of the net.

With the score now 4-3 it was getting pretty nervous even I was starting to worry we were going to blow it. However, up stepped the team. Showing the braveness and battle needed at this moment of pressure.

Joseph made another great save when under pressure. Bobby run tirelessly. Riley made more superb clearances. Molly was her ever dependable self and mopped up the loose ball on more than one occasion.

Munir then cynically fouled their attaker as he was storming through the middle to halt what could have been another decisive break. With seconds left on the clock Findlay cleared the ball up the pitch and Arlo and Oliver chased the loose ball and managed to force it back to the keeper.

Game over.

Final score 4-3 Wensum

40 minutes of hard work and effort from everyone was greeted with sheer relief by all the players who have work so so hard to make the step up each week. Their effort, energy and enthusiasm makes it worthwhile.

I cannot really explain how proud I am of each and ever single player and I know this echoes the feelings of all the staff and parents at Wensum.

Each week I have seen you grow as players, people and a team. Honest, kind and respectful in victory. The performance was that of players who totally trust each other on and off the pitch. They care, they listen and they always, always want to do their best – and this is all we ever ask. They earnt their victory today and I hope that they all enjoy the weekend knowing how much they have achieved and progressed.

Well played everyone. I am so so proud of each and every one of you.

Thank you to all the staff and families that came out to support us. We all really appreciate it.

Enjoy your weekend – Mr Whalen!!
