38 children from Wensum headed over to Earlham Park to take part in the School Games Cross Country Competition. Children from Y3-6 took part in races against other children from schools within the Norwich Sports Partnership. Cold, yet excited, we arrived and the races soon began. Children were all set and knew that the main aim was to enjoy themselves, but with the added bonus that a top 10 finish meant that they would get the chance to represent Norwich School Sports Partnership in the County Finals in February.

The Year 3 girls races saw Wensum get off to a flying start with Eva E winning the race! Closely behind here were Chloe, Ellie-Mae and Kyla. Next up saw the Y3 boys. Jack M lead the way and finished in 6th place. Kamsi, Jem and Jack S all finished in good time to record competitive places.

The Year 4 races soon followed. Lani paced herself perfectly round the course and finished 8th – Izzy, Isabella and Freya all finished close together with looks of determination and tiredness on their faces. The boys race was a tough battle at the front. Billy E had to work extremely hard for his 9th place finish and just ensure his place in the finals. Aidan, Ben and Jack all made sure that they persisted and battled hard against the hills and tricky conditions.

After a short break, the Year 5 races started. Happiness, Hana and Evelina all ran really well in their first ever cross country races. The boys ran superbly in a packed field. Munir the first to cross the line in a respectable 18th. Oliver, Arlo and Findlay worked together to battle the hill and George and Tyler completed the team effort, also in all the boys first cross country races.

Y6 girls continue to show their natural instinct to model our school values in all that they do. Working together all the way through the races they ensured that no-one was left behind and that they did the best that they could. Pushing themselves through painful starts and the psychological battle of being out in the cold for a long time waiting for everyone else to finish their races. Well done to all 6 girls – Ella, Sophie, Chloe, Tia, Holly and Molly.

The Y6 boys race was another battle – James led the team of boys home with a very well earned 5th place finish. Riley F and Bobby were closely behind in the top 20 and Riley M was close behind them. However, the final and most important mention must go to Joseph and Tom. Inspired by a video of the famous Brownlee Brothers during a recent triathalon that we shared in class when looking at teamwork and helping each other – Joseph and Tom showed true team spirit and sportsmanship when they sacrificed their own personal achievements to help each other finish. Running the final stretch arm in arm with Tom pushing Joseph towards the finish line first.

This small act of kindness, support and teamwork did not go unnoticed. All the children and staff watching this commented on how wonderful it was to see. It captured the day perfectly. Yes winning feels good. But taking part, helping others, supporting our team and others and beating your own personal goals and targets is the bigger aim.

At Wensum we strive for children who are Brave and Articulate, Happy, Healthy and Safe and most of all Honest, Kind and Respectful. We all witnessed every aspect of our school vision and values at some point today… and this is why we just love being at Wensum! All of our volunteers and staff that attended enjoyed every moment and this is down to our children and their great attitude to sport!

Massive thanks to Jenny, Emma, Jeff and Mrs Humphrey in getting to and from the event with all the children. Thanks to Mr Wigg for coming along and supporting everyone too! Thank you to all of the families that came along to support and offer help and advice too. Finally, thank you to all of the children who were just absolute stars in everything that they did!
