Pablo Fanque was born in Norwich in 1810 and went on to become Britain’s first black circus owner. His circus was one of the most successful of the Victorian era. Name checked in the Beatles song Being for the Benefit of Mr Kite from their 1967 classic Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, his name has now been given to a new block of city centre accommodation opposite John Lewis. We will be learning more about Pablo Fanque as part of our Circus 250 Working as Artists project in the spring term.
