27th January

The big day has arrived…! Today, Drake and Stark class will be creating their own model Square Foot Garden. Scaled down to 1:12 of the size – Children will be working in small groups to create their replicas. They will also be working together to plan their gardening areas and what plants they will grow. There are lots of factors to consider – including what time of year seeds need to be planted and how much care each plant will need.

Designing our square foot gardens

The children have worked really hard today.  They looked shattered at the end of it.  Hardly surprising considering the amount  of work they did!  Below is a gallery of their garden designs.  In teams of 8 children had to select the vegetables they wanted to grow and record the correct quantity per square according to how much space a mature one would take up.

Below are photographs of children finalising their garden designs before carrying out follow-up research looking for top tips for successful growing and interesting facts.  Their notes were recorded in their new garden journals.
