What a great day in Y4 today. We had a visitor from the past as Sergeant Storey came to tell us all about ‘our lads’; the young men from the streets around our school who enlisted to go and fight in The Great War of 1914 – 1918. Sergeant Storey told their story through pictures, objects and genuine army kit, bringing the past to vivid life for us all. In the afternoon a film crew from BBC Voices came to film the session (grenade throwing) and interview a few children about their thoughts on the day. Tomorrow afternoon a poet from The Writer’s Centre in Norwich is doing a workshop with both classes, introducing and exploring poetry and stories from the era, and then on Friday we take the coach down to London to find out more at the Imperial War Museum. The aim of the project is for the children to work with BBC Voices to make a film which will be shown at Cinema City in November. This is a truly unique opportunity for our youngsters.
