While I was waiting to leave school with Dolphin class on The Big Bird Watch, I took my camera out to capture some maths…
Year 6 have been exploring ratio and fractions of amounts in maths this week. We have been exploring finding the ratios of different classroom items and also the ratio of children in each class. This moved on to children exploring how to find the fractions of amounts and which they would rather choose!
On Thursday 4th January, Y4 had a go at an NRICH task entitled ‘Number sandwich’. We were successful finding the correct sandwich for 3s and 4s but got stuck with 5s. However, the children displayed great perseverance trying to solve the problem, trying out different ideas based on ones that had failed. This problem is […]
Last Monday in assembly, we spoke about what great mathematicians have in common. These are: Being Resourceful, Being Curious, Being Collaborative, Being Resilient. The children will be practising these skills in some of their maths lessons during this half term (and throughout the year). There is a competition to design a character for each of […]
Year 6 having been exploring fractions this week in our maths lessons. We started this by exploring how we could display fractions in different ways using concrete materials. We used cubes, bead strings, counters, number squares and more to try and represent 3/4!
Year 4 have continued to find fractions of amounts and shown how to represent this in different ways. Here are some examples from their work:
These has been some powerful maths going on this week. Standing at the school gate at the start of the day I was greeted by 3 three children who wanted to show me some maths they had done at home. This wasn’t homework; just work done because the children had been so inspired by what […]
Today Y4 have been extending their learning about fractions by learning how to add them. We have looked at different ways of trying to show this visually, and then on a number line to help. The photo shows the use of Numicon to add fractions of the same denominator, using a fraction wall to add […]
Today was the final day of our 5 days of Inspirational Maths. The children have investigated shape patterns, number patterns and how maths and number can be represented visually. The key messages this week have been: Brains grow and change Mistakes are powerful Our brains think about maths visually Speed is not important (thinking deeply […]
