Each class has a homesteading session each week. Over the course of the year children enjoy gardening and growing; crafts; cooking, and animal husbandry.
Gardening and growing
We have several growing plots across the school site. Each year team takes responsibility for one for the year, planting seasonally and experiencing the magic of growing their own. We also have a polytunnel which we share across all year groups.
It is now well known that gardening and growing has huge benefits for physical and mental wellbeing and for many of our children this is a highlight of the school week. While gardening is rich in scientific and ecological knowledge and understanding, we believe that the true benefits come from having the time and space each week to work alongside one another pursuing a common goal; sharing conversation and stories, anecdotes and little bits of learning about gardening. It can be hard work, especially in the Autumn term when it is all about digging over the beds after the final harvest; making repairs and planning, but the preparation is worth it…
Due to the need for us to maintain a Covid-secure environment, we have had to make the difficult decision to pause cooking lessons.
