Oracy is to speaking what numercy is to mathematics or literacy to reading

In short, it is nothing more than being able to express yourself well.  It's about having the vocabulary to say what you want to say and the ability to structure your thoughts so that they make sense to others.

English Speaking Union - discovering voices

Oracy at Wensum

We believe that powerful oracy is one of the true 21st century skills; something that all our children need to master as part of our commitment to lifelong learning.  We use the Voice21 framework to support our planning and inform our assessment. Please click the links opposite to view the original Voice21 progression map and the version we have adapted to fit in with our assessment procedures.

This framework is built around for strands:

  1. Physical
  2. Linguistic
  3. Cognitive
  4. Social and emotional

We weave these strands into our planning across the curriculum and provide a range of opportunities for children to practice and demonstrate these skills. The showcase events for our REAL projects provide one of the major examples of this where children present their work to peers, families and experts.  Our storytelling curriculum provides tackles our oracy agenda from a different angle.
