The arts

The arts encourage self-expression and creativity and build confidence as well as a sense of individual identity.

We run a major arts project each year, alternating between visual and performing arts.  In the summer of 2021 we had our first every art exhibition at The Undercroft in Norwich city centre.  For 2022 we are planning an ambitious performing arts project with our long-standing partners Sistema Norwich.

Lower Phase

The exhibition (Year 1):  This is a visual arts exhibition as a city centre location.  Children submit one piece of work in a medium of their own choice.

Landphilharmonic Orchestra (Year 2):  Working with musicians from Sistema Norwich, children build their own instruments and then deliver a public performance.

Upper Phase

The exhibition (Year 1):  This is a visual arts exhibition as a city centre location.  Children submit one piece of work in a medium of their own choice.

The opera (Year 2):  Following the success of our first two  operas (2017, 2018) we want to enshrine this unique experience into our curriculum.  Working with musicians, songwriters and artists from Sistema Norwich, our children and staff write, stage and perform an original opera to members of the local community.

We are artists skills

  1. I can generate original ideas
  2. I can propose ideas to the group
  3. I can collaborate with others to turn ideas into artistic outcomes
  4. I can acquire and improve an artistic skill
  5. I can explain the artistic process
  6. I can confidently contribute to a public performance, showcase or exhibition

Lord Mayors Celebration Weekend

Wensum Junior School took part in the annual Lord Mayor's Celebration parade in 2018 and 2019. Plans to join for a third consecutive year in 2020 were thwarted by Covid19.   The whole school is involved in a range of arts activities in preparation for the event, and while participation on the day is voluntary, it has typically attracted over a 100 members of the school community.  Going forward we plan to participate every other year to coincide with our performing arts year (Year 2 of the cycle).
