Monday 22nd January – Circus 250 project historian visits wensum

Lizzie, heritage researcher from The Forum, visited Wensum today to tell us all about some of the ‘peculiar tales’ from Norwich’s circus past.  Children listened to accounts of visits to our fine city by The Great Blondin and Tom Thumb; of Wombwell’s travelling menageries, and much, much more.  These stories were captured in newspaper stories, advertising play bills and illustrations.  Over the coming weeks, the children will be using these stories as inspiration as they prepare to write their own newspaper accounts of these extraordinary events.  The children holding the rulers were measuring out the ‘height’ of Tom Thumb – 33 inches!  Year 3 and 5 have their sessions tomorrow.
